Herbs For Anxiety Treatment – Are They Effective?

Anxiety Treatment

Under the big picture where natural remedies are gaining popularity against traditional medications, herbal remedies have become a preference for anxiety patients. In treating this particular illness, traditional medications are thought to be addictive and even physically harmful, and thereby give rise to the increasing popularity of herbal remedies.

In general, herbs used for treating anxiety are selected based on their anti-anxiety ingredients. Some of the more commonly-known herbs are:

1. Kava Kava – Kava Kava is extracted from Kava crops in the western pacific, and is used in anxiety treatment for its tranquility delivering effect. The good things about using Kava Kava is that you will not get addicted to it. However, in a very small number of patients, violent allergic reaction has been reported.

2. Valerian Root – Valerian Root is extracted from the Valerian flower plant and is also a powerful tranquilizer that is popularly used in treating symptoms associated with insomnia and epilepsy. Valerian Root works quickly, usually in just an hour, but you need to be aware that it is mildly addictive.

3. St John’s Wort St John’s Wort -  Also known as Klamath weed or Goat weed, is commonly used in anxiety treatment for its ingredients that are capable of combating depression. In treating mild type of depression, St. John’s Wort is sometimes more often prescribed than traditional medications.

4. Other Herbs -  Other well-known herbal remedies for anxiety cure include passion flower, lemon balms, hops, chamomile, magnesium, B-complex,etc.

Without a doubt, herbs have been a hot topic in recent years, but are they really more effective? In treating anxiety, will herbal drugs eventually take place of prescribed drugs? At this point in time, the answer is probably NO. The fact is that there is no strong evidence yet to prove that herbs are effective in treating anxiety or, better yet, anxiety disorder, on its own.

Although you may have come cross the claims by manufacturers of herbal products or testimonies from patients that they have been helped by St John’s Wort or Valerian Root, traditional medications and behavioral therapies are still the best combination in battling anxiety and other mental conditions. The role by herbal medicines is only supplementary to the main two, at the very best. Having said that, herbs still carry an obvious advantage over the more powerful drugs for being less addictive and less harmful.

Your doctor may suggest herbal medicines prior to stronger medication if your condition is not so serious. However, you need to be very careful with which product you choose if you decide to purchase herbal drugs at a store. There are manufacturers who are more reliable than others, and it is worth your time to check out who they are, especially in the case of purchasing a medical product.

Herbs and medications are definitely not the solution, although they can help. St. John’s Wort did nothing for me, and I had a friend do some research and find that it’s really not effective for anxiety, but only for mild to moderate depression. Looking for something outside of ourselves to cure our condition is a great mistake all in itself. In the end, anxiety is all about taking action, gaining experience, and then taking better and wiser action based on our experiences.

I was studying something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your position on it is diametrically opposed to what I read before. I am still reflecting over the different points of view, but I’m inclined to a great extent toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so good about advanced democracy and the marketplace of thoughts online.
