Panic Depression
Sat, Feb 28, 2009
There’s really no such thing as panic depression. They are two separate disorders – “panic disorder” and “clinical depression.”
However, studies have shown that half of the individuals who have panic disorder, also suffer from clinical depression, or have suffered from depression in the past. So of course, the correlation between the two disorders is being studied even further.
Many people don’t understand clinical depression, just as they don’t understand anxiety disorders.
Many people get depressed over what’s going on in their lives, and they may even mope around for a few days, before something occurs to cheer them up, or they just decide on their own to stop feeling sorry for themselves and cheer up on their own.
But these people aren’t suffering from clinical depression, in which they are actually incapable of cheering up. It’s not because of anything happening in their lives, although that certainly may be a factor, but rather some kind of chemical imbalance in the brain, and therefore something that is only correctable through medication. The key is to find the correct dosage of medication, and the one that produces the least side effects.
Untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide in America. So you can see to people who suffer from panic depression is a really big deal.
How to know if you or a loved one has clinical depression? If you or a loved one suffers from two to three of the symptoms below, see a doctor.
1. Feelings of general sadness that lasts for over a month
2. Loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed
3. Considerable weight gain or weight loss
4. Inability to sleep, or tendency to sleep all day long
5. Loss of energy
6. Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness or worthlessness
7. Thoughts of death – either suicide or causing the death of others
It cannot be emphasized enough. Frankly, even if you only have one of these symptoms, you should go see a doctor.
